Question: Office etiquette and baby showers, wedding showers etc?

I am somewhat of a newly wed and have worked with a certain office for a few years. The year before my wedding our office manager threw 2 bridal showers ( one for a second marriage like mine ) and a baby shower for one of the new brides. When I was getting married and preparing for my wedding I made it clear our wedding was small and family only. I was hurt beyond belief that I didn't also get a bridal shower like the other girls.... I will say that I have always been cordial about work and keeping a distance with my personal life. However... I didn't invite my office to our wedding due to the fact I simply couldn't afford it. I mentioned this to a colleague of mine and she was mortified when I brought it to light. I think office's should either celebrate everyone or NO ONE. Is this a fair request?/

Perhaps they thought that if you weren't going to spend money to invite them to your wedding that they shouldn't have to spend money to give you a gift. who knows.

You don't get married for the gifts, therefore you shouldn't expect a shower. I'm sure they didn't throw you a shower because you let them know they weren't invited to the wedding.

I agree. Its not fair to assume that a worker can afford to invite their fellow co-workers. It gets so complicated, then people from your work will fill obligated to go or buy you a gift and so on if they are invited & sometimes people are invited just because you can't leave anyone out. I think that they should celebrate every ones event unless otherwise stated by the person that they do not wish to celebrate a shower in the office.
