There's also a handful of players throughout NFL history who never played American football in their lives before being picked up by a team. These are mostly kickers who played Aussie rules football, soccer, or rugby. Darren Bennett was a punter with the Chargers throughout the 1990s who played Aussie rules football in Australia. They brought him in as a punter and he revolutionized a punting style where he kicks the front point of the ball first, putting a backspin on it like a chip shot in golf. It was also funny to see him listed on the Chargers' roster where it would say "College: None ". He said that the hardest part of learning how to punt a football was taking the snap. The first time he took a snap to punt a ball, he said it came in so fast and with an upward trajectory that it flew right over his hands and hit him square in the face. |
