Question: Best digital camera manufacturer?

(Posted by: questionable on 2006-11-22 13:22:13)

Have around £200 to spend on a digital camera, looking for something high spec, sturdy and slim.. any ideas on which manufacturers to consider? ..and which to avoid?

The top manufacturers are Canon and Nikon, but Fuji, Panasonic, Sony also have some good product. Around the £200 range you should consider the Canon SD700 IS, which has image stabilization (corrects for shaky hands), and the Fuji F30, which has the best sensor among digicams. This page has a comparison of the SD700 against the F30 -- vsxl.com/ cameras/ Canon_PowerShot_SD700_IS_vs_Fujifilm_FinePix_F30_Zoom.html Good places for reviews of digital cameras are DPReview.com, Steves-Digicams.com, and Imaging-Resource.com.

I do alot of photography. My two personal favorites are Kodak, and Canon. However, in these times there are alot of other good digital cameras to consider. Technology is a wonderful thing!

Canons are nice, that what my dad has. Mine is an HP. Hewlett Packard. Make sure you leave enough money for the memory card. The more mega pixels the camera is the more space it takes up on the memory card. I have a 1 gig memory card ($30/ $40) and it fits 500 pictures at 5 mega pixels each.

Consumer Reports for November 2006 has ranked the Canon Powershot A620 as the best compact digital camera. It is becoming almost a legend for longevity at the top of various consumer lists. It looks like this model has been replaced by the A630, which I would expect to be just as popular. The A640 appears quite similar and shares the "600 " series numbering, so I guess it's just another upgraded version of the now-classic A620. It looks pretty much the same except for being a 10 MP camera. I own a few Nikon DSLR's and I'd buy the Canon A630 or A640 for myself. The A620 was rated about twice as good as any as far a battery life. I hope the A630 and A640 are just as good. Use Energizer e2 LITHIUM batteries and you will be happy with battery life. With this camera, you will find the memory card is a cute little token of thanks from Canon, but not much more. Buy a 1 GB Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme III card. You will NEED the increased capacity and write speed to fully realize the benefits of your camera. dpreview.com/ reviews/ compare_post.asp?method= sidebyside &cameras= canon_a620%2Ccanon_a630%2Ccanon_a640 &show= all AVOID any camera that only has a monitor and no optical viewfinder.

I am a professional photographer and when this question comes up, at this price, I give one current answer - Panasonic. Yes I know Sony make good cameras but Panasonic are the only one to use a 28mm lens, wide angle, so indoors you won't find yourself trying to push back through the corner to get everyone in. Their camera have image stabilisation and this helps obviate blur. if your hand shakes. They have a considerable number of models but for you I'd recommend the FX01 - pocket sized, 6 megapixel (good enough for prints up to A4 size) and wide angle lens. Go for it!
